There have been instances when innocent people are thrashed to death by irate mob over false rumours of child-lifters. Amid a spate of lynching cases purportedly triggered by posts circulated on popular messaging apps the government even directed WhatsApp to immediately take steps to prevent the spread of "irresponsible and explosive messages", saying the social media platform cannot evade its responsibility. However, there are certain questions that are raised by the spike in such incidents. Who is behind the spread of such rumours which impels crowd to commit murders?
