Sudan: 31 Tribals From Karnataka Stranded, Embassy Asks Citizens Not To Venture Out Amid Widespread Looting

According to Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority Commissioner Manoj Rajan 31 people hailing from the state are stranded in Sudan.

Amid large-scale violence in Sudanese capital Khartoum, the Indian embassy has issued a fresh advisory urging Indians not to venture out of their residences and stay calm. They have also been advised to ration their supplies in case of the situation worsening further.

Taking to its official Twitter page, the embassy wrote, "We have come across many instances of looting.  All Indian nationals are advised please not to venture out.  Please ration your supplies.  The situation may continue for a few more days.  Please try to take help from your neighbours.  Please stay at home and remain safe."

Meanwhile, Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Tuesday appealed to the Centre to take steps to bring back 31 people belonging to Hakki-Pikki tribe of the state, stranded in war-torn Sudan.

According to PTI, Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority Commissioner Manoj Rajan in a statement to the media said, "We have got a message that a group of 31 people hailing from Karnataka are stranded in Sudan. We have informed the Ministry of External Affairs about it."

“As of now, stranded people should stay wherever they are and not venture out.The MEA is seized of the matter and is working on it," Rajan further said in the statement.

According to the official data, the number of Indians living in Sudan is close to 4,000 of whihc 1,200 settled down in the country decades ago.

A dispute between the Army and the para-military over a proposed timeline for handing over power to a civilian government has led to clashes between the heavily armed supporters of the two groups. Tanks, artillery and other heavy weapons are being used by the fighters in densely populated areas causing millions of people to remain confined inside their houses.

At least 185 people have been killed and over 1,800 wounded since the fighting erupted between the two sides, reported PTI.
