'Sit Here For A Day, You Will Run For Your Life!' CJI Chandrachud Blasts Lawyers 'Dictating Dates' To SC
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud asked the lawyers appearing in Shivsena defection case to sit with the court master for one day and see the pressure on Supreme Court judges.
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Tuesday asked the lawyers appearing in Shivsena defection case to sit with the court master for one day and see the pressure on Supreme Court judges. After the counsel was seen making repeated requests to the top court to hear the case on the date which suits him, CJI Chandrachud warned him to not "dictate dates" to the top court and expressed displeasure at this conduct by the lawyer.
"Why don't you come and sit here and tell the court master what dates you want? Ultimately you see this is too much. You see the kind of pressure of work on the Court's time. If you like, come and sit here, please come and sit here. Sit for the day. I assure you, you will run for your life!" CJI Chandrachud said.
The lawyer was pressing for a favourable date of hearing of the petition of the Shiv Sena (UBT) against the Maharashtra Speaker's refusal to disqualify the MLAs of Eknath Shinde group. The the matter was listed today, it was not taken up. The court listed the case for next Thursday and directed lawyers to file one complete compilation in Shiv Sena as well as Sharad Pawar's case against Ajit Pawar faction over NCP.
After the counsel sought an earlier date, saying that the compilation could be made within three days, CJI Chandrachud made the above remarks and asked him to sit personally with the court master.
Just before this case, the CJI Chandrachud had warned the lawyers appearing in the West Bengal School Services Commission (WB SSC) case against the Calcutta High Court order quahing nearly 25,000 appointments. The CJI said that he will have the lawyer removed if he interferes one more time to seek early hearing in the WBSSC case.
