SC Stays Demolition Of Goa Curlies Restaurant Linked To Sonali Phogat's Death

The stay order was imposed by the Supreme Court on the condition that no commercial activity take place at the famed beach hut on Anjuna beach in North Goa.

The Supreme Court on Friday postponed the destruction of Goa's Curlies restaurant, which had come to public attention in recent days following the murder of Haryana BJP politician Sonali Phogat, news agency ANI reported.

The stay order was imposed by the Supreme Court on the condition that no commercial activity take place at the famed beach hut on Anjuna beach in North Goa. The apex court will be hearing the issue on September 16, 2022.

"There shall be stay on demolition with respect to structure in Survey No. 42.10 subject to the appellants not undertaking any commercial activities in respect of structures," the court said.

An official claimed earlier in the day that the Goa government has begun razing the controversial eatery for breaking Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) guidelines.

The lawsuit was filed against the restaurant after its owner failed to obtain relief from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) from a demolition order issued by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) in 2016.

Phogat was discovered partying at a nightclub just hours before her death. Her two colleagues, as well as Curlies' owner Edwin Nunes, were later arrested in the case. Nunes was later released on bail.
