Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar Rebukes MPs Over Parliament Ruckus: ‘World Watches Our Democracy, Yet We...’

Dhankar urged the parliamentarians to "examine their conscience and introspect deeply" and not squander precious opportunities to serve the people of the country.

As the winter session of the Parliament concluded on Friday following a dramatic week roiled by protests, scuffle, injuries, and allegations, Rajya Sabha Chair Jagdeep Dhankhar delivered a stern message to the parliamentarians on both the sides, urging them to engage in reasoned dialogue rather than mocking public trust and expectations.

He further remarked that while the world watches our democracy, the leaders are "failing citizens" through their conduct.

"The world watches our democracy, yet we fail our citizens through our conduct. These Parliamentary disruptions mock public trust and expectations. Our fundamental duty to serve with diligence lies neglected," Dhankhar said.

"Where reasoned dialogue should prevail, we witness only chaos. I urge every Parliamentarian, regardless of party, to examine their conscience," the Vice President added, referring to the increased disruptions during the session since it began on November 15.

Dhankhar, against whom the Opposition submitted a no-confidence motion, which was later rejected, urged the parliamentarians to "examine their conscience and introspect deeply" and not squander precious opportunities to serve the people of the country.

"The citizens of our democracy – one-sixth of humanity – deserve better than this spectacle. We squander precious opportunities that could serve the greater good of our people. I hope Members will introspect deeply, and citizens exercise their accountability. These hallowed chambers deserve conduct that honours our oath, not theatrics that betray it," he said.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Friday after a motion to nominate 12 members to a Joint Parliamentary Committee on 'One Nation, One Election' bill was approved. The Chairman even held meetings with JP Nadda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and other leaders opposition parties in a bid to resolve the issue.

After the scuffle at the Parliament on Thursday, which left two BJP MPs injured, the morning session today witnessed protests from the opposition members, which led to an adjournment. MPs from both the ruling BJP and the opposition parties staged protests and traded allegations amid the uproar over yesterday's storm at the Parliament steps.

Congress MPs rallied behind Rahul Gandhi who has been booked for "assault and incitement" based on a police complaint filed by BJP MPs. They also slammed the saffron party for the ruckus yesterday and demanded Amit Shah's resignation over his remark on BR Ambedkar.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi slammed the ruling BJP-led government over the charges against her brother Rahul Gandhi, stressing that he could never push anyone. She claimed that the BJP is "scared" that the opposition would raise this issue as Shah's remarks have "exposed their true sentiments" about Ambedkar.

Calling the FIR against Rahul Gandhi "baseless" and a "distraction", she said: "This is the Government's desperation. They are so desperate that they are lodging false FIRs. Rahul ji can never push anyone. I am his sister, I know him. He can never do such a thing. Frankly, the country knows this too. The country is watching how desperate they are that they are lodging baseless FIRs...These are all distractions."

Meanwhile, the injured BJP MPs Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput are still being monitored at the RML Hospital in Delhi, where they were admitted on Thursday. Police are likely to record their statements on Friday and may also call Rahul Gandhi for questioning.
