Rahul Gandhi On Unemployment: Neither UPA, Nor NDA Govt Has Given Clear-Cut Answers To Youth

Rather than solely blaming the Modi government, he acknowledged the shortcomings of the Manmohan Singh-led UPA administration.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi took a balanced stance in the Lok Sabha today, addressing the pressing issue of youth unemployment in his reply to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address. Gandhi, while refraining from directly attacking the ruling NDA government at the start of his speech, acknowledged that neither the current nor the previous governments had provided a “clear-cut answer” to India’s employment crisis.

"Neither the UPA government nor today's NDA government has given a clear-cut answer to the youth of this country about employment," said LoP in Lok Sabha, highlighting the struggle of young Indians seeking job opportunities.  Rather than solely blaming the Modi government, he acknowledged the shortcomings of the Manmohan Singh-led UPA administration.

"...Even though we have grown, we've grown fast, growing slightly slower now but we are growing. A universal problem that we have faced is that we have not been able to tackle the problem of unemployment," he said in his Budget speech.

Rahul Gandhi in his critique of the Modi government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative during his speech in the Parliament Budget Session 2025, called it a good initiative that failed.

Gandhi acknowledged the vision behind ‘Make in India’, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports. However, he argued that despite high-profile promotions and investor summits, the initiative had not delivered real results.

"The Prime Minister proposed 'Make in India', a good initiative. We saw the statues, functions, and the so-called investors, and the result is right in front of me today. Manufacturing fell from 15.3% of GDP in 2014 to 12.6% of GDP today, i.e., the lowest share of manufacturing in 60 years," said Gandhi in Parliament.
