PM Modi To Attend World Climate Action Summit In Dubai On Nov 30, Dec 1: MEA

PM Narendra Modi is set to take part in the World Climate Action Summit in Dubai, convened by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The summit, part of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP-28).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Dubai, UAE, from November 30 to December 1, 2023, at the invitation of Sheik Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The visit is for the World Climate Action Summit, which forms the High-Level Segment of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP-28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). COP-28, presided over by the UAE, is scheduled from November 28 to December 12, 2023.

The Ministry of External Affairs released a statement confirming PM Modi's participation in the summit. It stated, "The Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC provides a unique opportunity to impart momentum for collective action towards combating the shared challenge of climate change." The statement highlighted that during COP-26 in Glasgow, Prime Minister Modi had unveiled five specific targets, known as "Panchamrit," as India's unparalleled contribution to climate action. Additionally, he announced the Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE). Climate change has been a focal point during India's G20 Presidency, with notable achievements captured in the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration and other outcomes.

The upcoming COP-28 is seen as an opportunity to build on these successes. The statement emphasised the role of the summit in advancing the commitments made by India in the global fight against climate change.

"Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with some of the Leaders participating in the Summit," the statement informed.

The World Climate Action Summit will bring together heads of states and governments, leaders from civil society, business, youth, indigenous peoples' organisations, frontline communities, science, and other sectors. The summit aims to facilitate discussions on actions and plans to scale climate action.

In August of the previous year, India revised its nationally determined contributions, aligning its national action plan with the goals set in the 2015 Paris Agreement. These commitments include the crucial target of limiting global warming to well below 2°C and preferably to 1.5°C.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav To Participate In COP28

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav is set to participate in high-level events and roundtables during the 28th session of the annual climate talks (COP28), news agency PTI reported. The topics to be covered will include finance for climate goals, emissions reduction, adaptation to climate impacts, and transitioning to a green economy with inclusivity.

Anticipated discussions at the climate conference include negotiations on the operational aspects of the fund intended to provide financial support to developing and poor countries for climate impacts, as well as funding for adaptation. The global south is expected to ask the global north to undertake rapid decarbonisation and significantly scale up finance and technology support to limit global warming to 1.5°C, PTI reported.

The summit may witness intense negotiations on unfulfilled promises of financial aid, particularly the yet-to-materialise $100 billion pledged by rich countries by 2020. Additionally, some countries, notably the European Union, are expected to advocate for a global deal to phase out unabated fossil fuels during COP28.
