On February 19, the birth anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj is celebrated in Maharashtra in a spectacle manner with cultural dance and plays.
New Delhi: On the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the Maratha leader via Twitter.
On Saturday morning, he tweeted, “I bow to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti. His outstanding leadership and emphasis on social welfare have been inspiring people for generations. He was uncompromising when it came to standing up for the values of truth and justice. We are committed to fulfilling his vision.”

The Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu also tweeted, “My tributes to legendary Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his birth anniversary. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid tribute to Shivaji Maharaj and wrote, “The torchbearer of Hindavi Swarajya, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was an upholder of Sanatan Dharm & protector of Hindus. Symbolising valour, he cast a formidable shadow on the despotic rule of foreign invaders. On his Jayanti, let's pledge to create the Bharatvarsh of his dreams.”

Shivaji Maharaj was a fearless king in the 17th century who fought many battles against the Mughals and established many grand forts. He is considered to be the first Indian emperor to introduce the concept of Naval forces.
His birth anniversary was first announced in 1870 when Mahatma Jyotirao Phule discovered the Maratha Emperor’s tomb in Raigad. Since then the day is celebrated as a festival across Maharashtra. It is also observed as a state holiday.
