V-P Dhankar To Meet Floor Leaders To Discuss Justice Varma Case; JPC On ONOE Extended: Top Updates

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha held a stormy session marked by heated debates on MNREGA dues, the Justice Varma case and many other issues.

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha witnessed another stormy session on Tuesday. 

Member of Parliament from both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Opposition parties traded barbs over various issues, including clearing of MNREGA dues, Justice Varma case and others.

In a major development, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on 'One Nation, One Election' has been granted an extension by the Lok Sabha until the first day of the final week of the monsoon session.  This came after JPC Chairperson PP Chaudhary asked for the committee on simultaneous polls to be given an extension.

Parliament Session Top Updates:

  • MP Shashi Tharoor of Thiruvananthapuram brought up the concerns of Keralan fisherman, claiming that Sri Lankans fished in Indian waters.  Since bull trawling was affecting fishermen's livelihood, he sought to limit it.
  • Amid protests by opposition members over MGNREGA dues for Tamil Nadu and other states, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 12 PM. The explanation from Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, the Minister of State for Rural Development, regarding the payment of MGNREGA debts for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal did not satisfy the opposition MPs.
  • In the Sushant Singh Rajput case, TMC MP Sagaraika Ghose raised the issue of the media's accountability. This came after the CBI declared the Sushant Rajput case to be a "simple case of suicide" in its closing report. MP Ghose questioned, "Who will apologise to Rhea Chakroborty?"
  • Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar said that he will meet with the floor leaders, including Leader of the House JP Nadda and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, at 4.30 PM today to discuss judge Yashwant Varma's case.
  • In response to Rajya Sabha Chair Jagdeep Dhankhar's call for the meeting, LoP Mallikarjun Kharge stood up and expressed gratitude for the Chairman's extensive constitutional knowledge.
  • Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar reprimanded the members who have filed matters for discussion but were not present in the House.
