Tremors Felt In Bihar Districts After 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Nepal-Tibet Border

Bihar Disaster Management Department, tremors were felt in Patna, Madhubani, Sheohar, Munger, Samastipur and several other districts.

No immediate report of loss of life or damage to property was reported from Bihar.

Several areas in Bihar were jolted by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck near the Tibet-Nepal border, on Tuesday morning.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake measured a magnitude of 7.1 while China recorded the magnitude as 6.8. It was relatively shallow at a depth of about 10 kilometres which caused tremors in Bihar and several parts of north India.

No immediate report of loss of life or damage to property was reported from Bihar.

According to the Bihar Disaster Management Department, tremors were felt in Patna, Madhubani, Sheohar, Munger, Samastipur, Muzaffarpur, Katihar, Darbhanga, West Champaran, East Champaran and several other districts along the India-Nepal border.

The tremors triggered panic among people in Patna with them rushing out of their residences as a precautionary measure. People in Katihar, Purnea, Sheohar, Darbhanga and Samastipur also came out on the streets when the quake took place.

Visuals from Bihar showed fans and chandeliers shaking due to the impact of the earthquake.

At least 53 people have been confirmed dead and 62 others injured after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Shigatse in Tibet Region on Tuesday morning, China Xinhua News reported.

The earthquake was the most powerful recorded within a 200-kilometer radius in the last five years, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). Visuals showed the destruction caused by the earthquake in and around Shigatse.

Meanwhile, in Nepal's Kathmandu, the strong earthquake woke up people and sent them running out of their houses. It was felt in Kavrepalanchwok, Sindhupalanchok Dhading and Solukhumbu districts as well.

People witnessed the trees and electric wires on the streets shaking for some time.

The epicentre was about 75 kilometres northeast of Mount Everest, which straddles the border. The area is seismically active and is where the India and Eurasia plates clash and cause uplifts in the Himalayan mountains strong enough to change the heights of some of the world’s tallest peaks.
