OpenAI Secures Record $40-Billion Funding Round With SoftBank. Here's What ChatGPT-Maker Plans To Spend It On

OpenAI now contends with fierce competitors like Meta and DeepSeek, who have been making significant strides in the open-source space.

OpenAI has successfully secured $40 billion in a monumental funding round, making it the largest-ever capital raise for a startup, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP). The investment, spearheaded by Japanese tech giant SoftBank, values the AI powerhouse behind ChatGPT at an impressive $300 billion. This partnership marks a significant step toward advancing artificial intelligence, with ambitions to build Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

SoftBank's Bold Vision for Artificial Super Intelligence

With SoftBank’s backing, OpenAI plans to push the boundaries of AI research, focusing on creating an intelligence system that surpasses human capability. According to SoftBank, OpenAI is the closest entity to achieving "artificial super intelligence" (ASI). This collaboration promises to deliver groundbreaking developments, thanks to the necessary computing power it will unlock.

In the first phase of the deal, SoftBank will invest $10 billion, with an additional $30 billion to be allocated by the end of 2025, contingent upon meeting certain conditions.

OpenAI Shifts Toward Open-Source AI Models

Amid growing competition in the open-source AI landscape, OpenAI has also announced a pivot toward a more open approach to generative AI. Once a staunch advocate for closed models, OpenAI now plans to develop a more flexible AI framework that allows developers to modify and adapt technology to their specific needs.

“We’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but other priorities took precedence. Now it feels important to do,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. Despite the risks associated with open-source models, Altman recognizes the growing importance of adaptability in the AI field.

OpenAI Faces Increasing Competition from Meta and DeepSeek

This shift comes as OpenAI contends with fierce competitors like Meta and DeepSeek, who have been making significant strides in the open-source space. Meta's Llama AI has already surpassed one billion downloads, and DeepSeek's cost-effective R1 model is making waves in the AI industry. Both companies allow developers to download and modify their models, a feature OpenAI has only recently begun to embrace.

As AI models become more ubiquitous, concerns about security and control continue to challenge the industry's direction. With government agencies and large companies reluctant to use AI that they cannot modify or control, the battle for dominance in the AI space is intensifying.

In addition to these strategic shifts, OpenAI continues to ride the success of its latest image-generation capabilities in ChatGPT. Sam Altman recently revealed that the tool added one million new users within an hour, overwhelming the company’s processing units in the process.
