National Herald Case: Sonia Gandhi To Appear Before ED For Second Round Of Questioning Today
Sonia Gandhi's daughter and party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is again expected to accompany her to the ED office today.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi is likely to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today, July 26, in New Delhi for the second round of probe in the National Herald newspaper case. She will depose before the federal probe agency around noon for recording her statement by the ED investigating officer, reported news agency PTI.
The Congress president was earlier to depose before the Enforcement Directorate on Monday in the money laundering case but it was deferred by a day.
Sonia Gandhi was questioned by ED on Thursday for nearly two hours where she replied to 28 questions put forth by the agency probing alleged financial irregularities in the case. Sonia Gandhi's daughter and party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had also accompanied her to ED's office.
According to PTI, Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi are expected to accompany her to the ED office again today. Vadra may stay back to provide medicines and other medical care, if required by the 75-year-old Congress president.
As the probe took place Thursday, July 21, huge protests were carried out by the Congress party and its workers in different parts of the country.
The protests led to arrest of senior Senior Congress leaders like P Chidambaram, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhry, KC Venugopal, Ajay Maken, Shashi Tharoor, Manickam Tagore, Sachin Pilot and Harish Rawat. Ashok Gehlot, K Suresh and Mallikarjun Kharge were also among those detained.
Instances of violence were also reported during the protest including in Bengaluru where Youth Congress workers allegedly set a car on fire, in front of ED office.
The Congress has slammed ED's action against its top leadership and called it "political vendetta"
