Mumbai Police Lodge Another Extortion Case Against Former Chief Param Bir Singh & Sachin Waze

The Mumbai police official informed that dismissed police officer Sachin Waze and four others have also been named as accused in this case.

New Delhi: Mumbai police registered another case of extortion against former city police commissioner Param Bir Singh, an official informed on Saturday.

With this, a total of four such cases has been lodged against Singh within a span of one month. It is the second case filed in Mumbai while two others were filed in Thane city, news agency PTI reported.

The latest FIR against Param Bir Singh was filed on Friday night at Goregaon police station after 48-year-old builder Bimal Agarwal lodged a complaint against him.

The Mumbai police official informed that dismissed police officer Sachin Waze and four others - Sumit Singh alias Chintu, Alpesh Patel, Vinay Singh alias Babloo and Riyaz Bhati - have also been named as accused in this case.

Agarwal had complained that the accused extorted Rs 9 lakh from him for not conducting a raid on two bars and restaurants that he ran in partnership. He alleged he was forced to buy two smartphones worth around Rs 2.92 lakh for them.

The incident occurred between January 2020 and March 2021, the complaint stated.

Accordingly, the case was filed under IPC sections 384 and 385 (both pertaining to extortion) 34 (common intention) against the six accused and the probe is underway.

Param Bir Singh is currently posted as DG Home Guards and has not been attending office since May, being on sick leave.

Previously, Marine Drive police station in Mumbai on July 22 registered an FIR against the former Mumbai police chief, five other police personnel, and two more persons for allegedly demanding Rs 15 crore from a builder.

The next day, another case of extortion was registered against him and some other police officers at Kopri police station in Thane.

The third case of extortion was filed against the senior IPS officer at Thane Nagar police station on July 30 following a complaint lodged by businessman Ketan Tanna.

The case lodged at Marine Drive police station was later handed over to state CID for probe, while Thane police issued lookout notices against Param Bir Singh and other accused persons in connection with the FIRs registered in the city.

Param Bir Singh was shown the door as Mumbai police commissioner in March this year and transferred as the DG-Home Guard. This came after the arrest of Sachin Waze in the Antillia case wherein an explosives-laden SUV was found near the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai.

Singh later accused the then-state home minister Anil Deshmukh of corruption, leading to the latter's resignation in April.
