Monsoon Update: Red Alert For Rain In Northeast, Orange Alert In North — Check IMD Forecast For These States

In its latest forecast, IMD issued also issued 'red alert' for extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya

Delhiites woke up to a cloudy morning on Friday, with India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting moderate rain over the city. As per the weather department, the northern and central India is likely to witness moderate rainfall activity accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in till July 8.

In its latest forecast, IMD issued also issued 'red alert' for extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. It also issued an 'orange alert' for Goa, parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, predicting very heavy in isolated places.

The orange alert signifies a preparedness advisory for authorities due to the potential for heavy rainfall exceeding 115.6 mm and up to 204.4 mm within 24 hours, while the red alert is the most urgent form of alert, signaling rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm within 24 hours.

Above-normal rainfall has been recorded in several northeastern states in this monsoon season, leading to heavy flooding, landslides, and waterlogging in some areas of Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh. 

IMD Forecast For Five Days

As per IMD's latest forecast, isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad on July 6 and in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on July 6 and 7.

Heavy rainfall is also likely in West and East Madhya Pradesh, on Friday, and in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and East Rajasthan till Saturday. Similar weather pattern in predicted in Uttarakhand on July 8 and in Uttar Pradesh till July 9.

Moreover, isolated very heavy rainfall likely over Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on Friday, over Uttar Pradesh till Saturday and in Uttarakhand till Sunday.

For east and northeast India, IMD predicted fairly widespread to widespread, light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning during next five days.

"Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Jharkhand on July 5, in Odisha on July 6, 8 and 9 and In Bihar on July 6 to 9," the forecast said.

It added that heavy rainfall is also likely in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from July 7 to 9 and in Assam and Meghalaya on July 8 and 9.

Further, isolated very heavy rainfall is predicted over Bihar on Friday in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Saturday and in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Saturday.

Very heavy rainfall is also likely in Assam and Meghalaya on Saturday and Sunday and over Odisha on Sunday. IMD predicted isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and Meghalaya on Friday.

For southern and western India, the weather agency said fairly widespread to widespread, light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning is very likely over Kerala, Lakshadweep, Coastal Karnataka, Goa, Gujarat during next five days.

Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Interior Karnataka are expected to see scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall for the five days.

"Isolated to scattered, light to moderate rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Rayalaseema, Telangana during next five days," the department said.
