Monsoon In Kerala: The Southwest Monsoon is poised to make an early landfall in Kerala within the next 24 hours, arriving nearly a week ahead of its usual June 1 schedule. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this marks the earliest onset in 16 years with similar early arrivals last recorded in 2009 and 2001.

Meteorological conditions conducive to the onset of monsoon have already established themselves with Kerala experiencing heavy rainfall over the past two days. The IMD confirms that this rainfall, coupled with favourable wind patterns and cloud formations, signals a definitive arrival of the monsoon.

According to ANI, IMD said, "Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala today, the 24th May, 2025, against the normal date of 1st June. Thus, southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala 8 days before the normal date."

The early movement of the monsoon was first observed on May 13, when it entered the south Andaman Sea — eight days ahead of the typical May 21 entry date, reported Indian Express. Now, its swift march toward the Indian mainland is expected to bring widespread showers and gusty winds across the southern peninsula.

Weather Forecast 

The IMD has issued rainfall warnings for Kerala and Karnataka through May 28, predicting moderate to heavy rains accompanied by winds ranging from 40–50 kmph. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Telangana are also expected to experience intense rainfall activity between May 26 and 27, reported India Today.

In a recent weather bulletin, the IMD indicated that a new low-pressure system is likely to form over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27. This system is expected to intensify over the following two days, further influencing regional weather patterns.

According to IMD, "A low-pressure area is likely to form over westcentral and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around 27th May, 2025. It is likely to become more marked during subsequent 2 days. Scattered low and medium clouds with embedded intense to very intense convection lay over central & south Bay of Bengal & Andaman Sea. Scattered low and medium clouds with embedded moderate to intense convection lay over north Bay of Bengal. Depression has already formed."

Authorities across the southern states have been advised to remain on alert and take precautionary measures as the monsoon sets in earlier than usual, potentially bringing with it both relief from heat and heightened risk of localised flooding and wind damage.
