Assam: Army Major, Wife Arrested For Torturing Minor Domestic Help For Over 6 Months

The 16-year-old girl was tortured for over six months and suffered grievous injuries, such as broken teeth and nose, and burns on her body.

An Army major and his wife have been arrested for allegedly ‘brutally torturing’ their domestic help in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. According to a report by PTI, the minor girl was employed as a domestic help in their home and had earlier accompanied the couple to Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, where the man is currently posted, reported news agency PTI.
 
Dima Hasao SP Mayank Kumar said police received the information about the girl being tortured on Sunday. “During investigation, prima facie evidence was found against the Army major and his wife and they were arrested in connection with the case and sent to judicial custody,” the SP said

A report by NDTV said that the 16-year-old girl was tortured for over six months and suffered grievous injuries such as broken teeth and nose, and burns on her body. The report also said that the couple starved the girl and when she requested food, she was told to eat from the garbage bin. The girl also alleged that she was stripped and beaten up. A report by News 18 stated that the girl also had a cut on her tongue.

A case has been registered at the Haflong Police Station under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Kumar said that necessary assistance such as medical treatment is being provided to the girl. “Further probe is underway. Strict action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation,” Kumar was quoted by PTI.

A similar case of assault was reported from Delhi this year where a couple had tortured a 10-year-old girl, who was hired as a domestic help. The case came to light after a relative of the girl found injuries and burn marks on the child’s body.
