"Capt Shiva Chauhan of Fire and Fury Sappers became the first woman officer to be operationally deployed in Kumar Post, at the highest battlefield of the world," tweeted Fire and Fury Corps.

Siachen Glacier, known as the highest battleground on earth, has witnessed India and Pakistan clashing intermittently since 1984.

A team of eight specially-abled people created a world record when they reached Kumar Post at 15,632 feet on the Siachen glacier in September 2021. Indian Army special forces veterans from CLAW Global (Elite Team of Former Special Forces soldiers) and the grit of the team made Operation Blue Freedom a grand success, said Northern Command of the Indian Army.

Soldiers lead a tough life at the highest battlefield, which is spread across 76 km area, owing to sub-zero temperatures that dip below -60 degrees. The area faces a constant threat of avalanches, crevasses on the glacier, high-speed winds and a range of potentially fatal altitude-related ailments.

The climatic condition poses the biggest challenge for the armed forces apart from the threats from Pakistan and China military.

Soldiers posted in the region are affected by a range of fatal altitude related ailments like frost bites, hypoxia, hypothermia and white outs.
