Manoj Tiwari Replaced As Delhi BJP Chief, Adesh Gupta Takes Charge
The move comes a day after Tiwari was detained along with party workers for alleged violation of lockdown norms on Monday.
New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader manoj Tiwari has been replaced as the party’s Delhi unit president by Adesh Kumar Gupta, in the first major rejig within the party after JP Nadda took over as its national president.
The move comes a day after Tiwari was detained along with party workers for alleged violation of lockdown norms on Monday. A gathering was called at Rajghat to protest against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal government's alleged failure to handle the Coronavirus crisis in the national capital.
Adesh Gupta has previously served as North Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor. Tiwari had offered to quit after the BJP lost to the Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi assembly polls and his term was also over.
"I am thankful to Modi ji, Nadda ji and other senior leaders of the party for appointing a humble party worker like me to the post of State Party President. It will be challenging to expand and consolidate the party base in view of Covid-19," Gupta said soon after his appointment as Delhi BJP chief was made public.
Tiwari is BJP's member of Parliament from North East Delhi constituency. About a week ago, he was spotted flouting social distancing norms while playing cricket at an event in Haryana without wearing a mask.
An official communique read that Adesh Kumar Gupta has been appointed as BJP Delhi president with immediate effect, on the order of party Chief JP Nadda. In another major announcement, the saffron party also appointed tribal leader and former Union minister Vishnu Deo Sai as its Chhattisgarh state president.
These are the first important organisational rejig in the BJP after the Coronavirus outbreak curbed political activities and the party primarily focussed on steering relief work for people affected by the lockdown. These political developments could be considered to be a return of regular political activities in the country as lockdown restrictions across the country have been relaxed to some extent.
