Maharashtra News: Protests took place in Amravati in Maharashtra against the violence that erupted in Tripura last month. Tension prevailed in many parts of the area yesterday after some unidentified persons pelted stones at shops during protests.

Today, BJP called for a bandh over the incident. There were several incidents of violence during the bandh, after which NCP leader and Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik has called for action against the culprits.

Two policemen injured:

Muslim organisations had yesterday declared a bandh in several cities of Maharashtra to protest against the communal riots in Tripura. During this time, incidences of violence were reported in some locations.

In Nanded, violent mobs ransacked several shops and pelted heavy stones, injuring 2 policemen. Government vehicles were also damaged during the demonstration. Communal violence broke out in Malegaon as well. The police had to resort to lathi-charge to control the violent mob. A senior police officer said that some were pelting stones at the open shops at the Zaiyab intersection and a case is now being registered on the complaint of shopkeepers.

Action will be taken against the guilty - Nawab Malik

On the violence, Minister Nawab Malik has said, "The incident that has taken place is unfortunate. The police will investigate it. Action will be taken against whoever is guilty. It is everyone's right to protest. But it is not right to commit violence in the name of the movement. I appeal to the people to maintain peace. Some anarchic elements are trying to spread violence.''

In Tripura's Panisagar, mobs had resorted to violence while protesting the attack against Hindus in Bangladesh and targeted religious sites, houses, and shops.
