Madhya Pradesh: Over 2,100 Cattle Infected With Lumpy Skin Disease, Transportation Of Bovine Animals Banned

Around 2,171 cattle have been affected by this disease across 10 districts of Madhya Pradesh. CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed the authorities to ban the transport of cattle from other states in the areas affected by the disease.

New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh administration has banned the transportation of cattle after over 2,100 of them were found infected with the viral infection Lumpy skin disease across 10 districts. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed officials, on Friday to take extra precaution and ban the transportation of bovine animals from other states in the areas affected by the disease.

“As many as 2,171 cattle have been affected by this disease across 10 districts of the state. Of these, the health of 1,717 animals has improved. So far 77, 534 animals have been vaccinated," said an official, as reported by PTI. 

Symptoms of Lumpy skin disease 

According to the official, the major symptoms of the infectious viral disease are fever, nasal and lacrimal discharge, ulcers in the eye, swollen lymph nodes and a drop in milk production. So far, the disease has been confirmed in Ratlam, Ujjain, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Betul, Indore and Khandwa districts of the state.

The symptoms of this disease have also been reported in animals in Dhar, Burhanpur, and Jhabua, the officials said,  as reported by PTI.

Lumpy skin disease is transmitted by blood-feeding insects, such as certain species of flies, mosquitoes, or ticks. It can lead to the death of the cattle.

Experts have said that it is important to take preventive measures such as proper cleanliness of cowsheds and segregation of healthy animals from infected ones.

The outbreak of the disease has been reported in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu-Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.

There is no danger to humans in eating meat or using milk of animals that do not have the symptoms of Lumpy disease. Animals can be cured, however, the milk of such animals may get affected due to the virus, ANI reported
