Kanpur Metro: From Route Map To Timeline, Know Interesting Facts Ahead Of Inauguration By PM Modi

On completion of the metro project, about 40 lakh passengers will benefit. The state aims to run Metro in maximum nine cities.

New Delhi: Denizens of Kanpur are looking forward to their New Year gift as Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday will inaugurate the completed section of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project at around 1.30 pm.

The development in the metro line comes after the successful run of Metro in three cities Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Greater Noida in the state. Kanpur will become the fourth city to get the metro.

PM Modi will also inspect the Metro Rail Project and undertake a metro ride from the IIT metro station to Geeta Nagar.

Interesting facts about the Kanpur Metro Rail Project

The 9 km long section of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project stretches from IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel.

The length of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project is 32 km and the estimated cost of the project is Rs11,076.48 crore.

The construction work was started on November 15, 2019, and the trial run took place on the 9 km IIT to Motijheel Priority Corridor on November 10, 2021.

On completion of the metro project, about 40 lakh passengers will benefit. The state aims to run Metro in maximum nine cities.

IIT Kanpur to Naubasta corridor will pass through the heart of the city covering several prominent educational institutions, Railway & Bus Stations, including IIT Kanpur. CSJM University. GSYM Medical College, Jhakarkati Bus Station and Kanpur Central Railway Station, etc.

Here’s the timeline of the project

  • October 4, 2016 - Akhilesh government laid the foundation stone of Kanpur Metro
  • 20 September 2017 – The Centre asked to make a detailed project report (DPR) again
  • 5 September 2018 - UP government sent new DPR of Kanpur Metro to the Centre
  • 28 February 2019 - The Union Cabinet approved the Kanpur Metro
  • 8 March 2019 - PM Modi laid the foundation stone of Kanpur Metro
  • 15 November 2019 - CM Yogi inaugurated the construction work of Kanpur Metro
  • 10 November 2021 - Kanpur Metro's official trial run begins

Here’s the map of the route inaugurated today

The metro will start from IIT Kanpur to pass through Kalyanpur, SPM Hospital, University, Gurudev Square, Geetanagar, Rawatpur, LLRH, Motijheel.

The 23.8 km long will begin from IIT and go till Naubasta. There are total 22 stations which include 14 above-ground stations and 8 stations underground.

Route 2 details

It will be 8.60 km long covering Agriculture University to Barra-8.  There will be total of eight stations. There will be four stations above ground and four stations underground.
