J&K Cop Shot Dead By Terrorists In Baramulla, Third Attack In 3 Days In Kashmir

J&K Police Head Constable Ghulam Mohammad Dar was shot dead by terrorists in the Baramulla district, this marks the third consecutive day of terrorist attacks in the Kashmir valley.

A policeman, identified as Head Constable Ghulam Mohammad Dar, was shot dead by terrorists in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. This marks the third consecutive day of terrorist attacks in the Kashmir valley. The incident took place outside Dar's residence in the Kralpora area of Pattan, Baramulla, where he was targeted by terrorists, news agency PTI reported. After being shot, he was swiftly rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held for the slain cop.

"No one had any idea where the gunshots came from. We later realised that Ghulam Muhammad Dar was fatally shot. He was shot three-four times and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead," Abdul Hamid Dar, a relative of the J&K Police head constable, said, as quoted by PTI.

This attack is part of a concerning trend of violence in the region, with two previous incidents occurring in the last two days. On Sunday, a police officer was critically injured in Srinagar during an attack by terrorists. The following day, a labourer from Uttar Pradesh was shot dead in Pulwama district.

The incident in Pulwama involved Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists who targeted the labourer, Mukesh Kumar, when he was returning from a local market in Tumchi Nowpora, PTI reported. Despite being rushed to a hospital, Kumar, a native of Bhatpora village in Uttar Pradesh, was declared brought dead by doctors. He had been working at a brick kiln in the area.

On Sunday, a terrorist from the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba critically wounded police inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani in downtown Srinagar while he was engaged in a game of cricket.

On this spate of violence, former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti stated, "In just a few days we are seeing an unfortunate rise in targeted killings. I condemn each one of these cowardly acts. My deepest condolences to the family of Ghulam Mohd Dar who was shot in Tangmarg today."

"The Union Territory administration is claiming to have transformed Jammu and Kashmir, but this is a serious matter. Combating terrorism is a challenge, and the increasing number of incidents of targeted and selective killings is a cause of concern. We appeal to the central government to create a concrete plan to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of common people," J&K Congress leader Ravinder Sharma remarked.

Earlier this year in May, a terrorist attack resulted in the tragic death of a circus employee in Anantnag district. In July, three labourers from Bihar were gunned down, and several others were injured in an attack in Shopian district.

Security Beefed Up In Kashmir Amid Targetted Attacks

In response to the escalating violence, security measures have been significantly strengthened across the Kashmir valley, with a particular focus on the Srinagar and South Kashmir areas. Security forces have intensified vehicle and pedestrian checks in various parts of Srinagar and other towns, particularly in the Pulwama district, PTI reported. Mobile vehicle checkpoints have been established at major intersections in Srinagar, as well as at the city's exit points.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh, expressed the need for caution and vigilance in light of these threats. He emphasized that the risks remained present, and the security situation could not be taken lightly. Singh stated, "We have to be cautious. The threats are still around, we cannot take these so lightly. We have to be careful, and I pray that he would come out of it", as quoted by PTI.
