Security Tightened Ahead Of Republic Day Celebrations
Multi-layered security measures, including drones and spotters, have been put in place to ensure the smooth running of Republic Day events in Kashmir, according to IGP VK Birdi.
Speaking to reporters after the full dress rehearsal at Bakshi Stadium, the site for the main Republic Day ceremony in the Kashmir Valley, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) confirmed that comprehensive security arrangements were in place for participants. "Security has been thoroughly organized for those attending the function," Birdi was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. He added that multi-tiered security systems, along with enhanced surveillance, are actively in operation to facilitate the smooth conduct of the event.
“Surveillance is being maintained through drones and spotters, alongside deep and intricate security measures,” the IGP explained. Birdi also encouraged the public to attend the Republic Day celebrations on January 26 in large numbers.
He emphasised that surveillance is being conducted on potential threats, including former militants who have surrendered. "Our police follow a strict standard operating procedure (SOP), and we are monitoring suspicious elements in accordance with the law," he remarked.
Responding to questions regarding allegations that high-profile individuals involved in the narcotics trade have evaded justice, Birdi assured that investigations are ongoing, but stressed that repeat offenders will face legal consequences. The full dress rehearsal was attended by V K Bhiduri, the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, who also addressed the media.
“This is a celebration for the people, and we encourage everyone to take part,” Bhiduri said, highlighting that Bakshi Stadium was selected to accommodate a larger crowd. He also noted that security arrangements this year have been improved compared to last year and invited the public to attend without the need for special passes, advising attendees to simply carry an ID card.
“We encourage a large turnout. Just bring an I-card, and there is no need for special passes,” he added.
