Jahangirpuri Violence: Delhi Police File Chargesheet Against 37 Accused, Links It To CAA & NRC Protests

The chargesheet submitted by the Delhi Police Crime Branch in connection with the Jahangirpuri riots will be heard in Delhi's Rohini Court on July 28.

Jahangirpuri Violence: The Delhi Police on Thursday filled the chargesheet against 37 people in the Jahangirpuri riots case, which took place in April this year, in Rohini court. Delhi Police said, according to the investigation so far and the evidence on record, the incident was a continuation of the demonstrations against CAA and NRC in Shaheen Bagh in 2019 and 2020, as well as the rioting in North-East Delhi in February 2020.

According to the police, the chargesheet has been filled against 37 people including 30 Muslims and seven Hindus, out of which, at least three have been designated as "principal conspirators" in the brawl.

"37 accused were arrested & 8 are absconding. From the probe conducted so far & material on record, it's established that the incident was in continuation of the protests against CAA & NRC of 2019 & 2020 in Shaheen Bagh & North-East Delhi riots of Feb 2020," the Delhi Police was quoted by ANI on its official Twitter handle. 

The 37 people held have been charged with 12 offenses, including rioting, arson, attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy. In addition to the 13 provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Arms Act was included in the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police's Crime Branch, according to authorities.

The police employed a facial recognition software (FRS) technology, as well as cellphone and CCTV footage, to apprehend the offenders, ANI reported.

On April 16, clashes erupted between Hindus and Muslims in a north-west Delhi neighbourhood during a parade commemorating Hanuman Jayanti. As the procession passed past Jahangirpuri's C-Block, a brawl erupted, which quickly escalated into stone pelting, injuring a few police officers and a civilian. The local police department opened an investigation, which was eventually moved to the crime branch.
