Jahangirpuri Violence | 4 Arrested, Five Charged Under NSA Sent To 8-Day Police Custody: Report

Ansar, Salim, Dilshad, Sonu, and Ahir have all been charged under the National Security Act.

New Delhi: Five of the main suspects in the Jahangirpuri violence incident have been sentenced to eight days in police custody, while four others have been sentenced to 14 days in judicial custody, India Today reported.

Ansar, Salim, Dilshad, Sonu, and Ahir have all been charged under the National Security Act.

All nine defendants were videotaped and presented to the Rohini court on Saturday.

The Crime Branch had told the court that the subject was extremely sensitive and that more research was needed to track out the other conspirators.

The Crime Branch further informed the court that during the course of the inquiry, the accused may be required to go to West Bengal and other locations. The police had requested eight-day detention for the suspects.

The court placed all five defendants detained under the NSA on eight-day police remand, while the remaining four defendants were placed in judicial detention.

Jahangirpuri Violence

So far, 24 people have been arrested in connection with the case, including the alleged main conspirator Ansar, along with three juveniles, the Delhi police said.

Clashes broke out during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in the national capital's Jahangirpuri area on Saturday in which eight policemen and a civilian were injured.

An FIR was registered on Saturday under Indian Penal Code sections, including 307 (attempt to murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 147 (rioting), and provisions of the Arms Act in connection with the incident.

The Delhi Police has also registered an FIR against the organisers of the Hanuman Jayanti procession that triggered communal riots in Jahangirpuri on Saturday.
