Armed men launched fresh attacks from the hills in the Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi villages in Manipur's Imphal East district. Several children, women, and elderly were rescued by security forces.
Panic gripped Manipur's Imphal East on Friday after armed men from the hills launched fresh gun-and-bomb attacks in two villages in the district, police said. At least two persons, including a policeman, sustained injuries in the gunfight.
The attacks took place in Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi villages, a senior officer told news agency PTI. As the armed miscreants launched attacks, the security forces retaliated, resulting in a fierce fire exchange in the two villages, the officer said.
"Armed men from the hilltop started firing indiscriminately and hurling bombs around 10.45 am in Sanasabi village and adjacent areas, forcing security personnel to retaliate," the officer said.
The policeman got injured in the gunfight in Sanasabi. He has been identified as 37-year-old K Haridash. He suffered bullet injuries on his left shoulder and was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences at around 3.30 PM, where he will undergo a minor surgery, PTI reported.
Another 'village volunteer' suffered minor injuries on his hands during the fire exchange and was taken to a private hospital. He is out of danger.
As the gun battle erupted between the armed men and security personnel, locals ran helter-skelter in panic to take shelter at a safe spot. "Armed men also launched attacks in Thamnapokpi village in the district around 11.30 am, creating panic among residents there," the officer added.
Several children, women, and elder people, who were caught in the firing, were rescued by the security forces, including CRPF personnel, PTI reported.
In another development, two militants of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group) were arrested from the Imphal West district, a police statement said on Friday.
They were held for their involvement in extortion activities. The statement said that the militants were arrested from the disctrict's Awang Wanagai Lamkhai area on Thursday. "Two mobile handsets and other items were seized from their possession," it added.
On Wednesday morning, another gunfight broke out between two armed groups in the Imphal East district as armed men fired from the hilltops of Kangpokpi district, targeting the Sinam Kom village.
A exchange of fire started after armed 'village volunteers', who were deployed at the foothills retaliated following the armed men's attack. Police stated that additional security forces were deployed in the area following the attack, PTI reported.
Another gunfight had broke out between armed miscreants and security forces in Imphal East's Thamnapokpi and nearby Uyok Ching on Tuesday night.
