For The First Time In The History Of Supreme Court, 9 Judges Take Oath In One Go. Check List

So far, there has been no woman Chief Justice in the Supreme Court. In September 2027, India may get the first woman Chief Justice in the form of Justice Nagarathna.

New Delhi: 9 new judges took charge in the Supreme Court today. Chief Justice NV Ramana administered the oath of office to them at 10.30 am. Out of the 9 people who became Supreme Court judges today, 8 are Chief justices or judges of the High Court. Apart from him, a senior lawyer was also directly appointed as a Supreme Court judge.

Due to the extraordinarily large number of judges taking the oath, the event was held in an auditorium with a capacity of 900 people. However, due to the Covid protocol, a limited number of people were allowed in the program. In this, apart from all the judges of the Supreme Court, Attorney General, Solicitor General, representatives of Bar Association, senior lawyers besides family and friends of newly appointed judges were present. In the program, only selected journalists reporting on the court were invited.

The program started at 10.30 am. The current 24 judges of the Supreme Court sat in the front 3 rows. 9 judges who took oath today sat in the fourth row. First, a registrar-level officer sought formal permission from the Chief Justice to start the program. After his permission, the officer read out successively the presidential order for the appointment of each new judge. After each order was read, the name of the newly appointed judge would be called and he would come to the vacant chair next to the Chief Justice in the front row. After that, the Chief Justice would administer the oath of office to him.

The judges took oath today in this order:-

  1. Justice Abhay Shreenivas Oka
  2. Justice Vikram Nath
  3. Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari
  4. Justice Hima Kohli
  5. Justice Bangalore Venkatramaiah Nagarathna
  6. Justice Chudalayil Tevan Ravikumar
  7. Justice M M Sundaresh
  8. Justice Bela Madhurya Trivedi
  9. Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha

Appointment after 2 years
Due to the lack of consensus in the collegium that selects the judges, there was no new appointment in the Supreme Court for almost two years. Due to this, out of the total 34 posts of judges, only 10 posts became vacant. After the new appointments to be held today, the number of judges has gone up to 33.

3 people can become Chief Justice
Of these judges, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice BV Nagarathna, and PS Narasimha are likely to become the Chief Justice of India in the future. So far, there has been no woman Chief Justice in the Supreme Court. In September 2027, India may get the first woman Chief Justice in the form of Justice Nagarathna.
