5.8 magnitude quake hits Pakistan, tremors felt in Delhi NCR

Mild tremors were felt in parts of north India including Delhi-NCR and Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday after an earthquake, measured 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Afghan-Pakistan border. No loss of life or damage to property was reported.

NEW DELHI: Mild tremors were felt in parts of north India including Delhi-NCR and Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday after an earthquake, measured 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Afghan-Pakistan border. No loss of life or damage to property was reported. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department's National Seismic Monitoring Centre in Islamabad, the epicentre of the quake was Hindu Kush, a mountain range that stretches near the Afghan-Pakistan border -- from central Afghanistan to northern Pakistan. The earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale took place at a depth of 208 kilometres in the Hindu Kush Region in Afghanistan, it said. The tremors were also felt in various cities of Pakistan, including Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Kohat, Swat, Mianwali and Sargodha, the Dawn News reported. Earlier in the day, a mild tremor was also felt in Karachi at 7:38 am. According to the Pakistan Met department, it was recorded at a 2.9 magnitude on the Richter scale. Another earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia's West Sumatra province. The epicente of the quake was recorded at 117 km southeast of Mentawai Island, at a depth of 17 km under the sea bed. No tsunami alert was issued with no immediate reports of any damage or casualties, officials said here.
