Delhi: Violence Breaks Out During Hanuman Jayanti Procession, 200 RAF Personnel On Ground

New Delhi: Violence erupted during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in Jahangir Puri area in Delhi on Saturday, police said.

According to officials, several vehicles have been vandalised by the miscreants and police personnel were injured in the incident.

"A clash broke out between two communities. But we have deployed adequate forces and senior officers are also at the spot. The situation is being brought under control now," news agency PTI quoted a senior police officer as saying.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, on the incident, said, "I appeal to everyone to maintain peace as the country can not progress without it. Central govt has the responsibility to maintain peace in the national capital; appeal to people to maintain peace."

According to reports, around 200 Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed along with Delhi Police to control the situation.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to two top Delhi Police officers on the incident of violence and directed them to take necessary action, official sources close to PTI said.

As per the sources, the home minister spoke to the Commissioner of Police and Special Commissioner (law and order) and asked them to take necessary action.

The police force also apprised the top functionaries of the Union Home Ministry about the violence. The home ministry has given necessary directions to the Delhi Police and is keeping a close watch on the situation, the sources added.

As per reports, when the police tried to handle the situation on the spot, they were attacked by the miscreants. It has also been told that stones were pelted during the procession.

Dependra Pathak, Special Commissioner of Police, Law & Order, as quoted by news agency ANI, said, "The situation is under control. We are trying to create a peaceful environment by holding talks with peace committees and appeal to everyone to maintain peace."

Meanwhile, the BJP leader Kapil Mishra termed the stone-pelting incident a 'terror attack'.

Additional forces have also been deployed in other sensitive areas, besides those adjoining Jahangirpuri.

CP, Delhi, after the incident said, "The situation is under control. Adequate additional force has been deployed in Jahangirpuri & other sensitive areas. Senior officers have been asked to remain in field and closely supervise the law & order situation & undertake patrolling."
