Cyclone Michaung: Storm Weakens, But State Grapples With Floods, Power Cuts. Top Points

At least 17 people have died in rain-related incidents in Chennai so far, as heavy rain triggered by the cyclone pounded the city and its adjoining areas.

New Delhi: As residents grapple with the aftermath of cyclonic storm Michaung, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday directed Collectors of districts and superintendents of police to work towards restoring normalcy in the affected areas.

He also directed officials to restore electricity in the affected places on a war footing and initiate steps to repair damaged roads and resume transportation services, reported news agency PTI.

Severe cyclonic storm Michaung made landfall crossing the south Andhra Pradesh coast between 12.30 pm and 2.30 pm on Tuesday.

At least 17 people have died in rain-related incidents in Chennai so far, as heavy rain triggered by the cyclone pounded the city and its adjoining areas. Chennai witnessed some respite as the rain stopped on Tuesday but struggled to cope with large-scale water logging, power cuts, and disruption in mobile networks.

Southern districts of Odisha and eastern Telangana continue to be on alert, according to PTI.

  • Reddy said in a statement said, "The cyclone has now weakened and all the authorities should focus on bringing normalcy in your respective areas. Be sympathetic to the affected people, put yourselves in their shoes and work on their needs."

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones due to Cyclone Michaung, and noted that authorities have been working tirelessly on the ground to assist those affected.

  • In a post on X, Modi said, "My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones due to Cyclone Michaung, especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. My prayers are with those injured or affected in the wake of this cyclone." "Authorities have been working tirelessly on the ground to assist those affected and will continue their work till the situation fully normalises."
  • Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai in a social media post assured the people that PM Modi is with them. He also informed that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Chennai tomorrow to assess the flood situation caused due to the cyclone.
  • Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor and luxury car maker Audi have extended support to customers in cyclone and flood affected regions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

  • In a post on X, the Indian Army's Southern Command said, "As the rain stops multiple families stranded in flood water specially elderlies, pregnant ladies, infants, and their parents, soldiers continue to provide basic amenities water, food into the deepest corners day or night."
  • The CM announced an ex-gratia of Rs 30 lakh to the kin of a police constable from Kadapa who lost his life when a tree fell on him during relief work.
