In the aftermath of cyclone 'Michaung,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to assess the preparations and assured him of all possible assistance. PM Modi also directed all top officials to ensure the extension of every feasible aid. Chennai's Kasimedu is experiencing high waves as people flock to the beach to click pictures. The IMD has issued an 'Orange' alert for the Andhra Pradesh and adjacent North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry Coasts due to Cyclone Michaung. The India Meteorological Department has cautioned that the cyclone is approaching the Andhra Pradesh and neighboring North Tamil Nadu coasts within the next 12 hours.

Here Are What All Happened So Far 

  • According to an IMD statement, the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours, advancing towards the west-central Bay of Bengal near the south Andhra Pradesh and neighboring north Tamil Nadu coasts by the morning of December 4.
  • The cyclonic intensified within the region, positioning itself approximately 300 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 310 km southeast of Chennai, 440 km southeast of Nellore, and 550 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, the IMD said.
  • As per IMD, after December 4, the cyclone would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 as a CS with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph.
  • Balachandran, Deputy Director General of Meteorology Center, Chennai said that there is a prediction of very heavy rainfall in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts. The expected wind speed will be about 60 to 80 km/h. From Tiruvallur to Cuddalore district, the wind speed will be about 50 to 70 km/h. Fishermen are advised not to go near the sea until December 5. Puducherry and Karaikal have recorded 35 cm of rainfall.
  • The Tamil Nadu government announced a public holiday on Monday for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts of the state. However, essential services, such as police, fire service, local bodies, milk supply, water supply and medical services will continue to work.

  • Schools will be closed in districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Kalaiselvi and Chengalpattu.  
  • Schools and colleges in Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam regions will also remain closed On December 4, 2023.
  • The South Central Railway (SCR) has declared the cancellation of 118 long-distance trains scheduled from December 3 to 7 owing to cyclone Michaung. Tamil Nadu's Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena conducted a review meeting on Saturday to assess the necessary precautionary measures amid the impending storm.

  • Further reinforcing preparations, the state government has dispatched 100 teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for dedicated rescue and relief operations during the cyclone.
