Cyclone Fengal: Puducherry, Yanam & Karaikal Declared Natural Calamity-Affected Areas

This decision comes in the wake of the devastating damages caused by Cyclonic Storm Fengal during November and December 2024.

The Puducherry government has officially declared the regions of Puducherry, Yanam, and Karaikal as "Natural Calamity Affected Areas" for the period commencing July 1, 2024, and ending June 30, 2025. This decision comes in the wake of the devastating damages caused by Cyclonic Storm Fengal during November and December 2024.

Puducherry Govt said, "Puducherry, Yanam and Karaikal regions of Union Territory of Puducherry are hereby declared as Natural Calamity affected areas commencing with 1 July 2024 and ending on 30th June 2025 on account of devastating damages that were caused by the Cyclonic Storm, "FENGAL" during the month of November-December 2024."

Meanwhile, Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has sought interim relief of Rs 614.88 crore from the central government to address the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Fengal and unprecedented rainfall in the Union Territory. In memoranda submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, Rangasamy detailed a sector-wise assessment of the destruction and urged immediate action.

The memorandum highlighted significant damage in Puducherry and Karaikal, affecting sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, health, electricity, public works, local administration, and forestry. Stressing the urgency, the Chief Minister pointed out that the Disaster Relief Fund lacks sufficient resources to facilitate effective relief and rehabilitation measures.
