Covid In India: Delhi Sees Spike In Daily Cases With 1,527 New Patients, Marginal Dip In Maharashtra

India reported a single-day surge of 10,158 coronavirus cases, highest in nearly eight months, along with 19 more deaths over the last 24 hours.

New Delhi: Maharashtra on Thursday logged 1,086 new Covid-19 cases over the last 24 hours, taking the active caseload to 5,700. The state reported one fatality and 806 recoveries during the same period. Earlier, on Wednesday, the state had clocked 1,115 cases and nine deaths. Delhi saw another spike with 1,527 fresh cases and two deaths. A total of 909 people recovered, taking the active caseload to 3,962 while positivity rate stood at 27.77 per cent. 

Meanwhile, India reported a single-day surge of 10,158 coronavirus cases, highest in nearly eight months, while 19 more deaths were recorded, including four from Kerala, according to the data uploaded by the Union Health Ministry on Thursday.

The 10,158 deaths reported on Wednesday are highest in 230 days, after a total 10,256 cases were recorded on August 26 last year.

With the 19 more fatalities, the death toll due to the virus has increased to 5,31,035. The new recorded deaths included nine from Maharashtra, two from Gujarat and one each from Delhi, Kerala, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, and four from Kerala.

Amid a surge in Covid cases, Delhi Education minister Atishi on Thursday said the government is reviewing the situation and guidelines for schools will be issued soon.

Addressing a press conference, Atishi said, "Our government is reviewing the Covid situation and guidelines will be issued to all the schools in this regard very soon."

This comes a day after Delhi's single-day Covid-19 cases count breached the 1,000-mark for the first time in over seven months on Wednesday, with the national capital reporting 1,149 fresh cases and one fatality.

"Since the Covid situation is deteriorating again, we have decided to take precautionary measures beforehand. Masks have been made compulsory for students and social distancing norms have also been implemented," chairperson of the National Progressive Schools' conference Sudha Acharya told news agency PTI.

Meanwhile, health officials on Wednesday said that Covid-19 in India is moving towards the endemic stage and the infections may keep rising for the next 10-12 days after which they are likely to subside.
