New Delhi: Covid-19 cases increased by 6.3 times in the last eight days in India, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Wednesday said. The ministry also said that Omicron was the predominant circulating strain in the country.
Dr V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, said the precautionary Covid-19 vaccine dose would be the same vaccine as has been given previously. “Those who have received Covaxin will receive Covaxin, those who have received primary two doses of Covishield will receive Covishield,” he said.
Meanwhile, India on Wednesday reported its first death linked to the Omicron coronavirus variant in Rajasthan. The man, who tested negative for the infection twice, died in a Udaipur hospital on December 31.

India registered a single-day rise of 58,097 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, the highest in around 199 days, taking the total tally of cases to 3,50,18,358. The active cases were recorded above 2 lakh after around 81 days, according to Union Health Ministry data.
The country’s Covid death toll has climbed to 4,82,551 with 534 daily fatalities, the data stated.

Meanwhile, 2,135 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected across 24 states and UTs. Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 653 cases followed by Delhi at 464, Kerala 185, Rajasthan 174, Gujarat 154 and Tamil Nadu 121 cases.

Odisha government has issued a new guideline. Night curfew will be imposed from 9 pm to 5 am, starting tomorrow. A total of 100 guests allowed in weddings and 50 at funerals: S.K. Priyadarsi, Police Commissioner, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack told news agency ANI.
