India Records 26,964 Coronavirus Cases In Last 24 Hrs, R-Value Dips Below 1

Corona Cases Update: India continues to record less than 30,000 Coronavirus cases for the second consecutive day. The country has reported 26,964 new COVID cases, 34,167 recoveries, and 383 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Active cases: 3,01,989 (lowest in 186 days)

Total recoveries: 3,27,83,741

Death toll: 4,45,768

Total vaccination: 82,65,15,754

India's R-Value Drops Below 1

The R-value, or reproductive number, for COVID-19 in India, dropped from 1.17 in August end to 0.92 in mid-September, indicating that the spread of the infection across the country has slowed down, according to researchers, reported PTI.

However, the R-values of some major cities, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, are over 1. The R-value of Delhi and Pune are below 1.

The R-values of Maharashtra and Kerala are below 1, giving much-needed relief to these two states with the highest number of active cases.

The R-value was 1.17 at the end of August. It declined to 1.11 between September 4-7 and since then it has remained under 1.

According to the data, the R-value of Mumbai stands at 1.09, Chennai 1.11, Kolkata 1.04, Bengaluru 1.06

The Reproduction number or R refers to how many people an infected person infects on average. In other words, it tells how 'efficiently' a virus is spreading.

Kerala

Kerala recorded 15,768 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, taking the tally of COVID-19 cases in the state to 45,39,953. The death toll increased to 23,897 with 214 new fatalities, according to the health bulletin released by the state ministry.

The number of people who recovered from the infection since Monday was 21,367 which brought the total recoveries to 43,54,264 and the number of active cases to 1,61,195, as mentioned in a PTI report.

As many as 1,05,513 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, the release said.

Among the 14 districts, Thrissur recorded the highest with 1,843 cases, followed by Kottayam (1,632), Thiruvananthapuram (1,591), Ernakulam (1,545), Palakkad (1,419), Kollam (1,407), Malappuram (1,377), Alappuzha (1,250), Kozhikode (1,200) and Kannur (993), it said.

Of the new cases, 100 were health workers, 124 from outside the State and 14,746 infected through contact with the source of it not clear in 798 cases.
