Youth Congress Protests Outside Smriti Irani's House, Burns Her Effigy Over 'Misbehavior' With Sonia — Watch

Congress members gathered outside Irani's house to carry out a symbolic protest and even burnt her effigy and sought apology from the Bharatiya Janata Party leader.

The ongoing controversy over Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's recent remark referring to President Droupadi Murmu as 'rashtrapatni' does not seems to settle down anytime soon. In a recent development, members of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and National Student Union of India (NSUI) on Thursday evening gathered outside Smriti Irani's house and staged a protest against the Union Minister over her 'manhandling' and "verbal assault" on party President Sonia Gandhi.

Members of the grand old party gathered outside Irani's house to carry out a symbolic protest and even burnt her effigy and sought apology from the Bharatiya Janata Party leader.

IYC, in an official statement, said that it staged a protest outside the residence of Union minister Smriti Irani over her alleged 'misbehavior' with Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Parliament.

Several IYC leaders and workers holding placards took part in the protest and raised slogans against Irani.

Speaking to news agency PTI, IYC president, Srinivas BV said, "Union Minister Smriti Irani behaved indecently and abusively in Lok Sabha on Thursday. The Parliament witnessed BJP's hooliganism and their MPs have insulted crores of women of the country along with Sonia Gandhi."

Earlier in the day, the Congress has accused BJP MPs of subjecting Sonia Gandhi to "brutal heckling, verbal assault and physical intimidation" in Lok Sabha.

During today's Lok Sabha session, Sonia Gandhi walked across to the treasury benches and sought to know from BJP member Rama Devi why she was dragged into the issue and being asked to apologise. Reportedly, Irani intervened and was seen gesturing towards Gandhi and apparently protesting Chowdhury's remark.

A furious Sonia Gandhi then reacted to Irani's protestations after ignoring her initially. The Congress President was seen gesturing towards the minister and speaking angrily.

The entire controversy broke out after Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury used the term 'rashtrapatni' for recently appointed President Droupadi Murmu. Defending himself, the Cogress MP asserted that his remark was a "slip of tongue" and said he will apologise to President Murmu.
