Congress Conspired To Assassinate PM, Arrest Punjab CM Channi: Himanta Biswa Sarma

While speaking to reporters on the matter, Assam CM also demanded the arrest of his Punjab counterpart Channi for his role in the alleged conspiracy.

Guwahati: Amid the ongoing controversy over security lapse of Narendra Modi during his Punjab visit, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday tore into the Congress and claimed that party high-command and Charanjit Singh Channi had conspired to assassinate the Prime Minister of India.

While speaking to reporters on the matter, Biswa also demanded the arrest of his Punjab counterpart Channi for his role in the alleged conspiracy.

"All evidence makes it clear that Congress high command and Punjab CM conspired to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi," the Assam CM said.

"Punjab CID DSP Sukhdev Singh's voice was recorded in a sting operation in which he is telling a senior SSP on January 2 about the conspiracy. When the incident took place on January 5, CID gave details over it to higher officials," Sarma said during the presser.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was referring to a purported sting operation aired by a news channel in Punjab which claimed that the state Police already had an intelligence report regarding a plot to kill the Prime Minister.

PM Modi who was on his way to Ferozepur in Punjab to address a poll rally had to take the road route to the district because of inclement weather. He was, however, stuck on a flyover for around 15-20 minutes due to a blockade by some protesting farmers. The Union Home Ministry has describe the entire episode to be a major lapse in security.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has constituted an enquiry committee headed by former top court judge Justice Indu Malhotra to probe the PM's security breach.

While slamming the blame game between the state government and the Centre over the entire episode, the apex court said: "War of words between them is no solution. It may rather impair the need of a robust mechanism to respond at such a critical juncture."
