'Completely Against This': Punjab Congress On Alliance With AAP, Latter Says 'Their Call'

Punjab Congress unit leader has said that they are completely against any alliance with AAP and will meet party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to convey the same.

In what could be seen as big trouble for the Congress, the Punjab unit of the party has raised objection to an alliance with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) amid the ongoing attempt of leaders for a united front against BJP-led NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabah elections. The Leader of the Opposition in Punjab and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa said that the state unit of the party is completely against this. Bajwa said that he will meet Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament on Monday and will express his concerns. This comes days after over 20 opposition parties decide to call the united alliance 'INDIA' during a meeting in Bengaluru.

Talking to news agency ANI, Bajwa said that one alliance is led by BJP and another by Congress, adding that AAP does not figure anywhere.

"Congress for a long time has been one of the two major parties of Punjab...People wanted a change, they brought these people (AAP) to power and people have been suffering...Punjab has been suffering be it economically, law & order and otherwise also...I am sure in the 2024 parliamentary elections Congress will come back with a big margin. One alliance is led by BJP the other by Congress, so when cast their vote it is going to be either for BJP or for Congress. AAP does not figure anywhere. Why should we form an alliance with AAP?" the Congress leader said.

He further added, "Punjab Congress unit is completely against this (forming an alliance with AAP)... I will meet Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday and will request him to not forge an alliance with them (AAP). We were not in alliance with them in past and will not be in future also."

Reacting to Bajwa's statement, AAP MP Raghav Chadha said that it is an internal matter of the Congress party.

However, he noted, "...They need to take a call on this. We are no one to give advice to anyone. During the opposition meeting, all the leaders said that personal ideologies should be kept aside and fight for the country and I think the outcome of this (Opposition unity) will be positive"
