The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Wednesday confirmed that a helicopter carrying Chief Of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat Army crashed at Coonoor in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. 13 of the 14 on board the ill-fated IAF helicopter were pronounced dead including CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and others.

CDS Rawat was on his way to the Defence Staff College in Wellington.

The lone survivor, Group Captain Varun Singh, Directing Staff at DSSC, is currently under treatment at a military hospital in nearby Wellington.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be making a statement in both the houses of parliament today.

The mortal remains of Gen Rawat, his wife and others killed in the mishap will be taken to New Delhi from Coimbatore on Thursday by air, after a wreath-laying ceremony scheduled this morning at Wellington.

 Former Army chief General Bipin Rawat was appointed the first tri-service chief on December 31, 2019, after the government introduced the Chief Of Defence Staff. 

Gen Bipin Rawat was commissioned on December 16, 1978, into the Fifth Battalion of the Eleventh Gorkha Rifles of the Infantry. While graduating from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, he was awarded the coveted 'Sword of Honour'.

Quoting official sources, PTI reported that all the injured people on board the chopper have been evacuated from the spot of the accident. A court of inquiry has been ordered into the accident, the IAF said.

IAF Chopper Crash | Mortal Remains Will Be Kept At Mortuary Of Army Base Hospital Till Tomorrow

At 7:46 pm, the mortal remains of the crash victims were brought to the Palam airport from the Sulur airbase near Coimbatore. Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari brought the mortal remains of all the deceased.

Meanwhile, all possible measures are being taken for positive identification of the mortal remains. The remaining mortal remains will be kept at the mortuary of Army Base Hospital till the completion of positive identification formalities.

Bodies of only CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, Brigadier LS Lidder and Lance Naik Vivek Kumar have been identified so far.

Govt Set To Start Process To Appoint Next CDS Soon; Gen Naravane Frontrunner

Meanwhile, the government is set to begin the process soon to appoint the next Chief of Defence Staff with Army Chief Gen MM Naravane emerging as the front-runner for the top post that fell vacant following the demise of Gen Bipin Rawat in a tragic helicopter crash.

The move by the government comes even as a number of retired military commanders said it will be prudent to appoint Gen Naravane to the top military post as he is retiring as the Chief of Army Staff in five months. (PTI)
