Biomedical Waste From Kerala Found Dumped In Tamil Nadu, Probe Initiated
A significant volume of Kerala’s biomedical and plastic waste had been illegally dumped at multiple locations including patta lands and a waterbody in Tirunelveli villages.
Huge amounts of biomedical waste, including sensitive medical records, from Kerala was found to be dumped in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district. The waste especially from Kerala’s Credence Private Hospital and the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) in Thiruvananthapuram was discovered in Tamil Nadu on December 15. The waste also contained confidential patient information sparking concerns on date privacy and environmental harazard.
According to authorities, a significant volume of Kerala’s biomedical, food, and plastic waste had been illegally dumped at multiple locations, including patta lands and a waterbody in Kodaganallur and Palavoor villages. Following the discovery, Tamil Nadu authorities launched a probe into the incident. However, locals and activists have criticised the delayed response. They pointed out that several complaints about similar illegal dumping had been submitted earlier but no immediate action was taken.
Following this, Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai accused DMK-led Tamil Nadu government of turning blind eye and providing free rein to Kerala to use Tamil Nadu as dump yard. Taking to X, Annamalai said, "The DMK government seems to be turning a blind eye to the illegal smuggling of minerals from Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts to Kerala, and on the other hand, it has given free rein to use Tamil Nadu as a garbage dump. Despite repeated complaints to the authorities and the Chief Minister's Special Cell, no action has been taken to stop this. This is happening with the full knowledge of the DMK government."
Annamalai reiterated that the DMK government should immediately stop Tamil Nadu border districts from turning into a garbage dump for the state of Kerala.
