Thunderstorms, Traffic Woes Grip Bengaluru Amid Yellow Alert Till April 20

The IMD's bulletin warns of light rain and thunderstorms, with wind speeds reaching 40–50 kmph, likely in several districts including Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural.

Bengaluru continues to grapple with persistent rainfall for the fourth straight day, causing widespread traffic snarls, flight delays, and waterlogged roads. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru, predicting more showers and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds through the weekend.

The IMD's bulletin warns of light rain and thunderstorms, with wind speeds reaching 40–50 kmph, likely in several districts including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapura, and surrounding areas on Friday. The city is forecast to remain partly cloudy with chances of scattered rainfall and strong breezes until April 20.

Daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 33°C, with nighttime lows dipping to 20°C, according to meteorological updates.

Heavy Traffic Adds To City's Woes

The wet spell has further intensified the city’s notorious traffic situation. A recent image of a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam on Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), sparking fresh criticism of the city’s traffic management and urban infrastructure, as per a report on The Hindustan Times.

Many online speculated the congestion was worsened by the long weekend getaway rush with April 18 marking Good Friday, a public holiday. The holiday adds to the regular Saturday-Sunday break. The viral photo showed a sea of vehicles crawling along a flyover symbolising the capital’s ongoing struggle with unmanageable traffic during peak hours and public holidays.

Residents are advised to plan their commutes carefully, stay updated through official advisories and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding during intense spells of rain.
