A Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus carrying passengers came to an abrupt halt on railway tracks just as the Mysuru-Chennai Vande Bharat Express was approaching. Thanks to the swift activation of the railway’s safety interlocking system, a major accident was prevented, though the incident led to significant disruptions in the morning commute.
Turn Of Events
The situation unfolded at around 7:15 AM when the BMTC bus, operating on Route 227J/1 from Maligondanahalli to KR Market, experienced a braking failure. The vehicle became immobilised on the tracks due to an airlock in its braking system which occurred after the driver attempted to restart the engine while the bus was still in gear, reported Money Control. As soon as the railway authorities were alerted, they engaged emergency protocols that automatically halted all train movement at the crossing.
Emergency response teams from BMTC and South Western Railway arrived at the site promptly. A crane was dispatched from the Kengeri depot to tow the bus, and by 7:35 AM, the vehicle was successfully removed from the tracks. Despite the rapid intervention, train services were affected. The Vande Bharat Express was detained for 35 minutes while Kacheguda-Mysuru Express also faced a 30-minute delay.

BMTC engineers were able to resolve the braking issue on-site, allowing the bus to continue its journey after temporary repairs. While no injuries were reported, the incident has intensified discussions on the safety of railway crossings, particularly those without adequate barriers, and the maintenance of public transport vehicles. Authorities are now being urged to implement stricter safety checks and improved coordination between road and rail agencies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
