133 Aircraft Grounded Across Domestic Airlines, 680 Operational For Passenger Travel: MoS Murlidhar

Of India's 813 aircraft, 680 are operational with IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express accounting for the majority. 133 aircraft are grounded.

New Delhi, Mar 24 (PTI) A total of 133 aircraft are grounded of the total 813 aircraft in the fleet of various domestic airlines, Parliament was informed on Monday.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha also said that of the remaining 680 operational aircraft, 319 belong to IndiGo while 198 planes are in the fleet of Air India and 101 with Air India Express.

The rest planes are spread across other airlines, the Minister said.

He also said that Indian carriers have placed orders for a total of 1,359 new aircraft in the previous two years, of which 999 new aircraft orders were placed in 2023 and 360 new orders in 2024.

Currently, 680 aircraft are operational for passenger travel and 133 are grounded spread across various airlines, Mohol said.

Regarding regulations for maximum permissible age for aircraft, the Minister said that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has not prescribed guidelines specifying life for an aircraft to fly in India.

Aircraft are considered airworthy provided the maintenance is as per approved schedule laid down by the manufacturer, he said in his written reply.

Aircraft registered in India may operate as long as type certificate is valid to the type of Aircraft and the aircraft is under production/maintenance support provided by manufacturer for the continuous operation of the aircraft, according to the Minister.

The aircraft may be withdrawn from operation by an operator, in case it becomes 'beyond economic repair' or is 'permanently withdrawn from use' due to any reason such as spares not available, Mohol said in his written response.

Rajya Sabha chairman holds meeting with Nadda, Kharge to discuss NJAC issue

(PTI) Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday held a meeting with Leader of the House J P Nadda and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge for a structured discussion in the Upper House of Parliament on the issue of judicial accountability and the NJAC Act.

The two leaders held closed-door consultations with Dhankhar in his chamber. The meeting began at 11.30 am.

The Rajya Sabha chairman had earlier written to both Nadda and Kharge for the meeting, a source said.

The meeting was held in reference to the observations Dhankhar made in the House on March 21 while responding to the points raised by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh over the recovery of cash from the residence of a high court judge.

Dhankhar had referred to the mechanism for judicial appointments after the passage of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act in 2014. The legislation was struck down by the Supreme Court later.

He had told the Rajya Sabha, "You all will recollect the mechanism which was passed by this House with near unanimity, with no dissension, only one abstention in the Rajya Sabha, all political parties converging and going in for the initiative of the government." "I wish to find out the status of that which emanated from Indian Parliament made sacrosanct by the endorsement of 16 state assemblies in the country and signed by the Hon'ble President under article 111 of the Constitution," he had said.

"That historic legislation endorsed by this Parliament with unprecedented consensual support unknown to the parliamentary history of this country dealt with the malaise very severely. If the malaise had been dealt with perhaps we would not have countenanced such kind of issues. What bothers me is that the incident happened and did not immediately surface," the chairman had further observed.

Dhankhar had further said that he would "get in touch with the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition, and find a mechanism for a structured discussion during the course of the session subject to their agreement."
