Centre Notifies Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022, Three Civic Bodies Merged - Check Details

The Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was earlier passed by the Parliament on April 5 with the aim to merge the three municipal corporations of Delhi.

New Delhi: Government of India, on Tuesday, notified the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022, reported news agency ANI. The Act merges three municipal corporations of Delhi — East, South, and North Delhi Municipal Corporations — into one which will be called the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Government will appoint a special officer to discharge the functions of the corporation, the news agency reported.

The Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was earlier passed by the Parliament on April 5 with the aim to merge the three municipal corporations of Delhi.

While presenting the Bill in the Parliament, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had blamed the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government in the national capital for “step motherly” treatment of the three municipal corporations of Delhi.

“All the three municipal corporations of Delhi are not functioning properly due to the step-motherly behaviour of the AAP party,” Shah had said.

He had further said that the unification of three municipal corporations into one was necessary so that these can work in a proper manner.

The Act is an amendement to The Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957. The Act was amended in 2011 by Delhi Legislative Assembly to trifurcate the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi into North, South, and East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
