Budget 2021: Ahead Of Session Canteen Prices Revised; No More Hyderabadi Mutton Biryani At ₹ 65

Budget 2021: The parliament canteen prices have been revised. A move that has been talked about since 2016 has finally come into motion ahead the Budget session.

New Delhi: Taking away the subsidies that made the canteen prices so cheap, the parliament has issues a revised list of the menu. The canteen will no longer serve Hyderabadi Mutton Biryani at ₹ 65 or boiled vegetables at ₹ 12. The new prices are almost at par with the market rates, roti will cost ₹ 3 making it the cheapest item in the menu, a vegetarian meal ₹ 100, and a non-vegetarian lunch buffet ₹ 700. The Mutton Biryani will now come in at ₹ 150 and the British heirloom of boiled vegetables ₹ 50.

Last week, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla who said that food served in parliament canteens for MPs and others will become more expensive as the subsidy being given out for it has been stopped. PTI reported that sources in Lok Sabha Secretariat said it can annually save more than Rs. 8 crore with the subsidy coming to an end. Mr Birla also said the parliament canteens will now be run by the India Tourism Development Corporation or ITDC in place of Northern Railways.

In 2019, sources said, ₹ 13 crore was being spent on subsidised food sold in the parliament canteen according to an NDTV report. 

The move comes ahead of the Union Budget Session. The annual Union Budget is to be presented on February 1st 2021, and the Parliament Budget Sessions will begin on Friday 29th January 2021 whereas the Economic Survey 2020-21 will be tabled in the Parliament on Friday, January 29, 2021.
