Kerala Journalist Siddique Kappan To Be Released From Lucknow Prison Tomorrow
Journalist Siddique Kappan from Kerala was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court one month before, and on Wednesday, a sessions court in Lucknow approved his release on bail, according to Live Law. Kappan will be released from custody by Thursday.
On December 24, 2022, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court granted Kappan bail in a money laundering case brought by the Enforcement Directorate, more than two years after he was detained by the Uttar Pradesh Police while travelling to the Hathras home of a young Dalit woman who had allegedly been gangraped and died.
In contrast to what the police said, Kappan's attorneys claimed that he intended to report on the gangrape occurrence.
After being detained by the Uttar Pradesh Police for alleged affiliations to the extremist Popular Front of India, which the Centre had on September 28 proscribed, Kappan was granted bail by the Supreme Court on September 9 of last year in a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
