SC Verdict On Monday On Delhi Govt’s Plea Against Appointment Of 'Aldermen' By L-G

The Supreme Court will give its verdict on a plea by the Delhi government challenging the appointment of 'aldermen' by the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday.

A bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala reserved its judgment on the matter in May last year.

As per IANS, the Delhi government requested the revocation of the orders dated January 3 and 4, 2023, as well as the ensuing gazette notifications, which stated that the L-G had appointed 10 nominated members to the MCD on his initiative rather than with the council of ministers' assistance or advice.

"This is the first time since Article 239AA came into effect in 1991 that such a nomination has been made by the Lieutenant Governor completely bypassing the elected government, thereby abrogating to an unelected office a power that belongs to the duly elected government," said the government's plea.

Bengal School Job Case: Out On Bail, TMC Legislator Summoned By ED On Monday

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned Trinamool Congress legislator Jiban Krishna Saha, currently out on bail, on Sunday in connection with the multi-crore cash-for-school job case in West Bengal.

Saha has been instructed to appear at the ED’s office in the central government office (CGO) complex at Salt Lake on the northern outskirts of Kolkata by Monday afternoon.

As per IANS, sources indicate that ED officials have called him in for questioning regarding irregularities in teaching jobs at state-run schools, both at the secondary and higher secondary levels.

Saha was arrested last year by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is conducting a parallel investigation into the school job case. However, he was released on bail earlier this year.

The Supreme Court on Monday took suo motu cognisance of the deaths of three civil services aspirants in the basement of a coaching centre here and sought responses from the Centre and the Delhi government.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan said the recent incident in the national capital was an eye-opener for all.

"These places (coaching centres) have become death chambers. Coaching institutes can operate online unless there is full compliance of the safety norms and basic norms for a dignified life.
