3 People Wounded In Knife Attack At Gare De Lyon Train Station In Paris, Attacker Arrested

A knife attack was carried out by an unidentified man on Saturday at the Gare de Lyon rail station in Paris, reported Reuters. Police stated that two of the victims sustained minor injuries, while the third was more severely wounded but not in critical condition. The police also said that the attacker was armed with a sharp weapon.

The suspect's motive was not immediately clear, but the police have detained the attacker. The stabbing spree occurred on Saturday morning at around 8:00 a.m. (0700 GMT) at the Gare de Lyon, a major station which serves domestic trains as well as those heading to Italy and Switzerland.

The assailant's identity has not been revealed yet. "The suspect did not cry out (any religious slogans) during his attack," Reuters in Paris quoted a police source. The source added that he showed the police an Italian driving licence.

After the incident, the area in the station between halls one and three was temporarily shut down.

A similar stabbing incident happened last year in January at Paris's international Gare du Nord station, during which six people were injured, including a French border police officer. The police shot the suspected attacker three times and took him to the hospital after he sustained serious injuries. The attack happened at 6:42 a.m. (05:42 GMT), and the assailant injured all six people within a minute, BBC News reported.

In December 2023, a 26-year-old French man was arrested for stabbing three people, one of whom was a German tourist killed near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The German man, a nurse, was with his wife when the attack took place. His wife was rescued by a taxi driver, after which the suspect fled and went on to attack two other victims. These included a 66-year-old British tourist and a 60-year-old French man who were stabbed near the River Seine, BBC News reported.
