What Is Kidulting? Know About The Viral Mental Health Trend Among Millennials

Kidulting- a trend born during the pandemic, has gained significant popularity, resonating with those seeking an escape from the stresses of adulthood.

New Delhi:  Kidulting refers to engaging in activities or behaviours that are typically associated with childhood- like playing games, watching cartoons, or using colouring books, as a way to reduce stress and improve mental well-being in adulthood. It acknowledges the importance of embracing nostalgia, reconnecting with one's inner child and promoting well-being. Additionally, it provides playful experiences to alleviate the pressures of modern life.

This trend, born during the pandemic, has gained significant popularity, resonating with those seeking an escape from the stresses of adulthood.

In this regard, Dr Arijit Bose Consultant Psychiatrist at NH RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundpur, Kolkata said, "Many individuals find comfort and stress relief in participating in activities such as colouring, playing video games or Ludo in their free time, or building LEGO sets. The benefits of kidulting stem from the positive effects it has on mental health."

Benefits Of Kidulting:

Dr Arijit Bose said, "Engaging in these activities can provide a sense of nostalgia, relaxation, and joy, helping individuals alleviate stress and promote creativity. It allows individuals to momentarily escape the responsibilities and pressures of adulthood and enjoy a carefree moment."

"However, it is important to note that excessive indulgence in kidulting activities can lead to escapism and neglect of adult responsibilities. It is crucial to strike a balance between indulging in childlike activities and fulfilling adult obligations. Additionally, some individuals may experience feelings of guilt or societal judgment when participating in kidulting, which can potentially impact their mental well-being. While kidulting can have multiple mental health benefits, it is important for individuals to maintain a healthy balance and not allow it to interfere with their daily adult responsibilities," he further added.

How Does Kidulting Help In Mental Well-Being:

Kidulting is more than a fleeting trend; it draws inspiration from the psychology of nostalgia and the concept of inner-child work, both integral to therapeutic practices. It serves as a form of therapy by allowing adults to nurture aspects of themselves that may have been suppressed or lost in the process of growing up. This practice invites individuals to mend their relationship with their inner child and reclaim fragments of their previous identities.

In the whirlwind of adult responsibilities, a heart-warming trend has emerged that invites millennials to revisit their inner child and find solace in the simple joys of yesteryears.

Jaisleen Kaur, who is an Image Consultant, Soft Skills Trainer & Life Coach at Dehradun said, "The act of kidulting holds an array of positive effects on mental health and overall well-being, making it a valuable therapeutic technique."

She then went on to list down how it helps in mental well-being:

  • Stress Reduction: The familiar and enjoyable activities associated with kidulting can act as a refuge from the demands of daily life. Engaging in these activities brings about a sense of relaxation and escapism, effectively reducing stress and anxiety levels.
  • Improved Mood: Kidulting triggers the release of endorphins, often referred to as the "feel-good" hormones. These natural high uplifts mood, leading to a heightened sense of happiness and contentment.
  • Boosted Creativity: Many kidulting activities are rooted in creativity and imagination, such as colouring or playing with building blocks. These endeavours stimulate creative thinking and enhance problem-solving skills, contributing to improved cognitive flexibility.
