The festival is celebrated on the 14th night of the dark fortnight in the month of Magha (February or March) in the Hindu calendar. Mahashivratri is a significant festival for millions of Hindus.

According to Hindu mythology, Mahashivratri is celebrated to commemorate the day when Lord Shiva married Parvati. It is also believed that on this day, Lord Shiva performed the dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. The festival is considered to be of great significance as it symbolises the victory of good over evil and the triumph of light over darkness.

Mahashivratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion across India. The festival is marked by fasting, prayers, and offering special offerings to Lord Shiva. Devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath and visit the temple to offer their prayers. They also observe a day-long fast, abstaining from food and water until the next morning.

In temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, special rituals are performed throughout the day. Devotees offer milk, honey, and other sacred items to the deity, and chant mantras and hymns in praise of Lord Shiva.

The most significant ritual of the day is the Shiva Linga Puja, where devotees offer water and milk to the Shiva Linga, a representation of Lord Shiva.
